THOMPSON PARK DISC GOLF 7TH ANNUAL ICEBOWL EVENT
With 19 players and more than 500 lbs of food...13 degrees..felt like 8 degrees with the wind chill factor...Tournament Director Kelsey Hedrick said that he had many new players...one being Michael Mohring who owns and operates Flex Disc Golf from Pittsburgh, Mohring brought along over 400 discs of many types for the players to purchase. With over four inches of snow on the ground players were able to make their way through the rugged back 18 of Thompson Parks 27 hole course without anyone body surfing down the tree lined landscape, although several players were startled when a large white tail buck and two does decided to join them while on hole number 21!
While players trudged along , many offered comments and ideas to better the new "Outback"nine which is still being cleared out in some areas and many new comers commented on how much they enjoyed the layout and design. Hedrick stated that he thought the reason for the low turn out this year was due to other ICEBOWL tournaments being played the day before in nearby Pittsburgh and Ashtabula. "We still raised over 500lbs of food for the Way Station which i think is awesome".
First place went to Scott Campbell with a score of 66, second place to Ron Hosek and third place to Jim Blasey who both tied with a 68 and had to compete in a closest to the pin contest to break the tie. The winner of the "Most food Donated trophy" went to Jim Aikens who gave over 119 lbs. Hedrick stated that there are several projects in the works for this coming summer at the disc golf course which will include moving a couple of baskets or tee's and the first "IRONMAN" tournament where players will play all 27 holes twice in one day!
Hedrick would like to thank all those who gave prizes, food and who helped out to make it another successful ICEBOWL. Special thanks to the American Legion post 374 and Rob Kenney.
Pictures and results will be posted soon!
